Features Harmful to Mahdaviyat
There may be some problems, questions or discussions which are harmful to awaiting and believing in Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) Here we want to discuss some of these probable problems which can make people go astray or do not believe him any more.

1. Misunderstanding
Wrong interpretations of awaiting, cause misunderstanding and will lead to wrong beliefs. Here we can consider these points:
a. some people think because Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) will clear all cruelty and injustice from the world, we should keep silent and do not try to change anything. Some other even believe that we should try to help the world be. Full of evil so it hastens Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.)’s deliverance. This wrong belief is exactly opposite to Koran and Hadiths. For it is one of important duties of Muslims to “enjoin what is just and good and forbid what is wrong and evil.”
Imam Khomeini, the founder of Islamic Republic of Iran, says:
“If we can fight with evil, we should clear cruelty from the world. This is our absolute religious duty. The point is that Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) will make the world full of justice. But it does not mean that we should stop our effort or we do not have any duty…. Should we forget our duty, which is mentioned in Koran? Should we leave forbidding the evil and enjoining the good? And make the world full of sins to hasten Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.)’s deliverance?”
b. some misinterpreted some Hadiths and concluded that any kind of revolution before Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.)’s revolution is wrong. In this way they condemn Islamic revolution of Iran, although it was a revolution against cruelty and injustice.
We should consider that many Islamic duties like Islamic punishments and jihad can be fulfilled only in an Islamic country. Therefore, forbidding revolutions in some Hadith s refers to evil revolutions or those which call themselves Followers of Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) or those which were begun without careful preparations.
c. Another misunderstanding is about harshness which some ascribe to Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.). In fact, he is the kind Imam who is the symbol of God’s mercy. As some people believe, he is not going to kill lots of people and make a blood bath.
Like the holy prophet (p.b.u.h.), he invites everyone to the truth of Islam and Koran at first, and most of people join him and accept his invitation. So he fights with those ignorant ones who consciously reject his invitation and deny him.
He can talk with such enemies by the language of sword.

2. Hurrying in his Deliverance
If we do not wait for something completely and try to make it happen in a wrong time, the situation may be inappropriate and not prepared. Hasty people are coward and cannot control themselves.
They do not consider the situations and without the backgrounds being prepared for his deliverance, hasten in his Deliverance.
A real expectant wants his deliverance to happen as soon as possible, but he does not hasten. He prays and asks God to hasten his deliverance, but as long as it takes to wait for his Imam, he waits more patiently. The longer it takes, the more enthusiastic he is for Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.)’s deliverance. They submit to God’s will and patiently try to prepare the world for his deliverance.
Abd Alrahman kathir narrates:
“I was in Imam Sadeq (p.b.u.h.)’s house when Mahram entered and said: “My Lord! Tell me when will be this event for which we are waiting?”
Imam said: “Mahram! Those who predetermine a time are liars and those who haste will die and those who submit and wait will survive!”
Why our Imams forbade haste in waiting? If you haste to advance the date of an event, but it does not happen after some time, you will get disappointed and do not wish to wait for it anymore. You will lose your temper and patience and instead of being submitted, you will complain and even you may deny Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.).
You may make others feel the some and cause many people deny him. The important point is that we should know awaiting is one of God’s traditions, and like all divine traditions should occur when all its factors are prepared and there is no need to be hasty.

3. Predetermining the Time of his Deliverance
Some try to predetermine a specific time for Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.)’s deliverance. However, it is a secret which only God knows. According to some Haidths, predetermining the time of his deliverance is strictly forbidden, and those who predetermine a time are called liars.
Imam Baqer (p.b.u.h.) says:
“Those who predetermine a time for [his] deliverance are liars! Those who predetermine a time for [his] deliverance are liars! Those who predetermine a time for [his] deliverance are liars!”
any way some people consciously, or some others unwillingly predetermine a time. The least effect they make on others is to make them disappointed.
The real expectants should avoid these cheaters and ignorant ones and trust in God’s promise.
4. Finding specific events as Signs of his Deliverance
There are many signs mentioned in Hadiths, most of which are stated indirectly. This has caused personal interpretations. Some people try to check the signs and find equivalent contemporary events for them, and so conclude that his Deliverance is close.
This may also cause disappointment for others. Imagine we interpret “Sofyani” as a cruel ruler in a specific region or analyze something as the “antichrist” [= Dajal]. Then we conclude that Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) will come back in a short time, but after many years he does not reappear, we may deny everything and lose our hope and faith.

5. Unnecessary Discussions
There are many points in this topic which are crucial in the process of awaiting. We should try to discuss the important point and avoid minor points which may cause misunderstanding.
Some discuss about subjects which are not necessary and may cause paradoxes and confusions for others. “Visiting Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.)” is one of them. If we focus too much on this topic and invite all people to make efforts to visit him, the main goal of awaiting will be forgot. If after a long period of effort to visit their Imam, people fail to see him, they will get disappointed or even deny him. We are advised to follow Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) and try to do according to his wish. Therefore the important duty which we should try to fulfill, is to make our duties clear so that everyone knows what to do to prepare the world for his Deliverance. Then if we visit him, he will welcome us and will show his satisfactions.
Other irrelevant subjects which are not necessary are his marital status, children, residence, etc. these are better to be put aside and other important subjects be discussed. Therefore, discussing conditions of his Deliverance and global preparedness are more important than the signs of his Deliverance; for if we know those conditions we do our best to prepare them.
Another point is that we should have a general view about awaiting. It means that when we discuss about one subject, we should consider all Hadiths about Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.). so we cannot refer to one part of Hadiths and conclude something or perform misunderstood analysis. For example some refer to the long wars and fights of Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) and introduce him as a harsh ruler and do not consider the kindness and mercy which he shows, according to some other Hadiths. Searching these Hadiths carefully, we can conclude that Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) will not treat all people the same; he is as kind as the holy prophet (p.b.u.h.) with the believers and on the other hand, he is harsh and strict with the foes and will fight and kill all of them.
For the lost word, we should know that these discussions needs mastery in the subject and those incapable of analyzing Hadiths and interpreting them are not allowed to join the discussion. They may harm the whole movement.

6. False Pretenders
During the centuries, in which Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) is hidden, many opportunists claimed they are his special representatives or have special relation with him. But they are liars.
In his last letter to Ali Ibn Mohammad Somari, his last special representative, Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) said:
“…you shall die in six days. Therefore, manage your works and finish them, but do not choose anyone as your successor; for the long Occultation has begun… In future some of my Shiites claim to visit me. But be aware whoever claims to visit me before the heavenly cry and Sofyani rebel, is a liar.”
Therefore, with this clear proof all Shiites should deny. Those who claim to visit Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) and do not let them deceive others. The worse is the one who claims to be Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) and establishes a sect. During history many deceivers claimed such a big, but wrong, claim and caused many naïve Shiites go astray.
They were surely supported with enemies of Islam and if we review their back grounds we easily find their evil wishes.
One of these corrupted sects is “Babieh”, whose leader and founder was “Ali Mohammad Bab”. He claimed to be the special representative of Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) at first and then claimed to be the Promised Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) and at the end claimed to be a prophet. “Bahaiyeh” was the offspring of this sect and another corrupted sect as well.
Those who trust such deceivers are naïve and do not have enough knowledge about Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.). they are eager to visit their savior and they are ignorant to the deceivers who claim to be special representatives of Imam Mahdi (p.b.u.h.) or even Imam himself. Real Shiites should be conscious and knowledgeable about their hidden Imam and just follow the Shiite jurists who are masters Hadiths.
